Washington DC's 30th Christmas Revels - “Echoes of Thrace”
Five performances, December 13-15 (matinees and evenings)
at the George Washington Lisner Auditorium, 21st and H Streets NW, Washington DC.
This December’s Christmas Revels (the 30th in Washington!), which is called “Echoes of Thrace,” will principally celebrate Bulgarian and Greek traditions from the area encompassing ancient Thrace (the home of Orpheus, the bringer of music). With Orpheus, the bringer of music, as our guide, this year’s Christmas Revels visits the cultures and countries of ancient Thrace, Orpheus’ original home. Join us for spirited dances of the Balkan mountains, the dulcet notes of the Grecian shores, thrilling melodies of Bulgaria and Turkey, and the distant echoes of Thrace that reached into neighboring regions.
This year’s guest artists include traditional Bulgarian folk band, Lyuti Chushki (Tzvety Weiner, Valeri Georgiev, Varol Saatcioglu, Larry Weiner, and Len Newman) along with Tzvety’s husband—dancer, singer and percussionist, Bryndyn Weiner; Greek musician, Spyros Koliavasilis, and his Karpouzi Trio (with Margaret Loomis and Len Newman); and the Bulgarian folk-dance ensemble, Zharava, (Desi Jordanoff, artistic director). But that’s not all… joining us from Bulgaria are Tzvety’s parents, acclaimed Thracian singer, Tanya Dosseva and master kaval player, Lyuben Dossev. This high-energy Christmas Revels is not to be missed!

The Washington Revels and the Bulgarian Music Society invite you to a night of folk music straight from Bulgaria. Lyuben and Tanya Dossevi (our very own Tzvety Weiner’s parents) are performing for the Bulgarian community on November 22, 2013 at the Bulgarian Embassy. This concert is a gift to all of us by the Washington Revels, for which we thank them.
In preparation for its 31st annual Christmas Revels – “Echoes of Thrace: Music, Dance and Drama of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey” – Washington Revels is proud to partner with the Bulgarian Music Society to present in concert two great folk artists from Bulgaria: celebrated Thracian singer Tanya Dosseva and master kaval player Lyuben Dossev. On Friday, November 22, 2013, they will perform at the Bulgarian Embassy together accompanied by their daughter, Tzvety Weiner, lead singer of local Bulgarian band Lyuti Chushki, drummer Bryndyn Weiner (Tzvety’s husband) and friends. This performance is particularly special because the two generations of musicians will perform side by side for the first time ever!

As a lead-up to the 31st annual Christmas Revels – ECHOES OF THRACE: Music, Dance and Drama of Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey – Washington Revels is presenting salon concerts featuring the principal “tradition-bearers” who will authentically represent the music of Bulgaria and Greece in the show. The concerts will explore in greater depth the music of Thrace and beyond.
This concert offers the unique chance to hear two of the top figures in traditional Bulgarian folk music – master kaval player Lyuben Dossev and his wife, celebrated Thracian singer Tanya Dosseva – who are traveling from Bulgaria to perform in the concert and show with their daughter, Tzvety Weiner, lead singer for local Bulgarian band Lyuti Chushki (also featured in the concert and show).

WORLD VILLAGE MUSIC & DANCE CAMP at TIMBER RIDGE (formerly known as Buffalo on the Danube) presents some of the finest bearers of Europe’s folk music and dance traditions in a laid-back program emphasizing personalized teaching, and room for jam sessions and other serendipity. We offer accessible dance, instrumental and singing workshops all day and great evening dance parties and concerts featuring live music. Music workshop participants have an opportunity to perform. The program starts with dinner on Friday and ends Monday afternoon. We welcome beginners and families with children of all ages!Venue: Timber Ridge Camp

The Annual Bulgarian Community Picnic 2013

Trifon Zarezan Celebration
Come shake off the February freeze and dance away the winter doldrums by celebrating Trifon Zarezan with us. Trifon Zarezan is the traditional Bulgarian wine celebration that marks the time of year when wine growers trim back their vines.
In commemoration of Bulgaria’s rich wine-making heritage, we will be offering complimentary tastes of several Bulgarian wines.
Please contribute to the celebration by bringing your favorite appetizer or dessert to share.
